It's hard to not have something taken out of you when you've lost three close, meaningful games in the Missouri Valley. This is especially true when you've lost two conference games at home and you've been swept by the team that you're chasing.
Even after all of that adversity, the youthful Bluejays squad did not give up on Saturday when they shocked Wichita State, 65-63. Creighton was on the skids and staring their fourth straight Mo Valley loss in the face until a late spark put them ahead. They were down by as many as 15 points late in the second half, but made a surge by killing 7-of-8 three-pointers in the second half. With one last drive, Cavel Witter threw up a shot that rolled off the front of the rim. Dane Watts appeared out of nowhere to tip it in with only seconds remaining. After the final whistle blew, Watts launched the ball into the crowd, releasing two weeks of winless stress.
It was a fun game to watch at the Qwest if you weren't busy having a nervous breakdown. A win is a win in the MVC. Even at home against this years Wichita State. It says a lot for the younger players like Woodfox, Stinnet, and Witter who played late in the game and were critical in the Jays offense. Booker Woodfox has been nails for the last two months. He's hitting jumpers, threes, and just providing a spark on offense that has been missing.
This win could prove to be vital in the Bluejays remaining schedule. A tough conference win like this can only better a young basketball team. The Bluejays (15-6, 6-5) are now in a four-way tie for third in the Missouri Valley Conference Standings. We'll see how coach Altman and the Jays respond after a win. Not an impressive win, but a win.
